What are the colors of the wires on a Honeywell 3 port? ›

The blue wire is the Neutral, N. The green/yellow wire is the Earth wire, E. The white wire is connected to the wire from the room thermostat which calls for heating (radiators or underfloor). The grey wire is used to drive the valve to the Water Off position, in which only the heating port A is open; it closes port B.

The yellow wires power the zone valve. Once the thermostat calls and the valve opens it closes an end switch (connected to the red leads) which calls in the aquastat relay.

Thermostat Wiring Tips

If your thermostat controls your heat, you will have a white wire. The Y wire is yellow and connects to your air conditioning compressor. The G wire is green and connects to the fan. Rc and Rh: The red wire(s) are the power source for your thermostat.

Attach the red wire to the R terminal (Call for heating and/or cooling). Attach the green wire to the G terminal (Fan). Attach the white wire to the W terminal (Heat). Attach the yellow wire to the Y terminal (AC).

Yellow is the most common color for cooling wires, but Blue is also used in some systems. The cooling wire connects the thermostat to a compressor. Black (Or Blue) Wire is the so-called C wire or common wire.

Red: Hot Wire

You will usually only see a red wire when an outlet is a 240-volt outlet or when a wall switch controls the outlet. In this case, when the switch is "on," the red wire will supply power to the outlet instead of the black wire. Like black electrical wires, red wires are also hot or live wires.

The brown is a switched live to the motor and the grey is a permanent live to the micro-switch which then energises the orange wire to the boiler - which must only operate once the valve has been opened.
