Can I pay for Shinkansen with an IC card? ›

Just touch your IC card to the ticket gate and board the Shinkansen. A payment for the Shinkansen fare will be made from your registered credit card when making a reservation (not deducted from the balance of your IC card).

Please designate your IC card from "Designate IC card" button on reservation complete screen or reservation details screen.

The Shinkansen e-Ticket Service makes it easier to travel ticketless and fast. If you register as a member and book your trip beforehand, there is no need for you to pick up your ticket at the ticket office or from a vending machine. Board the Shinkansen using just your IC card or Mobile Suica!

Save on the shinkansen with an EX-IC card

The easiest way to save on shinkansen costs is with an EX-IC card. You pay a deposit to get issued the card. Then, you download the EX App to your phone. Now, you can buy shinkansen tickets online using the app at discounts of ¥1,000-¥4,000.

Japan train tickets can be bought from touch-screen machines at all major train stations using credit or debit cards. The vast majority can be read in English, and they are fairly simple to use.
